The Light of Life

John 8: 12-30

 

I.      Light vs Darkness  Vs.12

A.    Vs.12  -  Jesus is continuing from 7:52 with saying, “I am the Light of the world.”  Jesus says “I AM” 23 times in the book John.  There are 7 different metaphors in which He uses the “I AM”:

1.    I am the Bread of life (6:35, 41, 48, 51)

2.    I am the Light of the world (8:12)

3.    I am the door of the sheep (10:7, 9)

4.    I am the Good Shepherd (10:11, 14)

5.    I am the resurrection and the life (11:25)

6.    I am the way, the truth, and the life (14:6)

7.    I am the true vine (15:15)

B.    Plain and simple, “the one who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”  The Pharisees again do not ________________.

C.   Great analogy between the sun, physical light, and Jesus the ____________ light.

II.    Arrogance and Ego will blind you.  Vs.13

A.    Pharisees are not happy with Jesus’s ___________ of authority.

III.   Jesus Knows their Ignorance  Vs.14-30

A.    We are back to the same Pharisee argument, ______________ about Yourself.

C.   Vs.19 Shows the Pharisees misunderstanding by ____________ Jesus’ reference to divine father with natural father.

1.    They ask “Where”, rather than ‘Who’.

3.    They totally __________ to understand Jesus which also shows their lack of a true understanding of God.

D.   Vs.21-30 shows their ignorance ___________, but not all.

1.    Jesus gives further information about himself and his father but the people are not _______.

a.    They think he might kill himself.  “Where I am going, you cannot come.”  Vs.21b

b.    They go back to, “Who are You?”  “For unless you believe that I am, you will die in your sins.”  Vs.24b

c.     They didn’t ____________ that Jesus was speaking about the Father.  “But He who sent Me is true; and the things which I heard from Him, these I say to the world.”  Vs.26b

d.    Jesus wraps up with talking about his ______________.

2.    Vs.30 - Many believed.  We do not know what that means.  Possibly at the day of Pentecost in Acts 2 after Peter’s sermon.
