JONH 8:31 THRU 5
We ended last week with verse 30.
John 8:30
[30] Even as he spoke, many believed in him.
So, Jesus's response was as follows.
John 8:31-32
[31] To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. [32] Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free .
People want to know the truth.
Does knowing the truth make you a believer?
It says that they believed.
Jesus knew their hearts.
How much did they believe?
How much do you believe?
He basically told those who BELIEVED what comes next.
Hold to my teaching. (HIS WORD).
"Disciples" is a word that refers directly to "discipline".
How could they be "set free"? They weren't slaves to anyone.
Jesus is using slavery to describe and explain exactly what he means.
They didn't have the New Testament yet.
Good vs evil.
Matthew 12:30
[30] Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.
Read: John 8:34 - 44
This is a great representation of a family member and a slave.
The Jewish leaders are stuck on themselves.
Who are you to tell us we are slaves? We don't need this! We are already GOOD
Exactly what Jesus needed.
You sin! You're a slave to sin! You can't change that!
You may be socially free, but you have a master called SIN.
Talk about Truth setting you free!!! He nailed them.
There is no escape from slavery.
They are a slave of Satan. Sin.
Truth and lies cannot exist in the same room. It means constant turmoil.
Evil will always support evil and will never support good.
Good will always support good and will never support evil.
Answer: know the Truth, and the Truth will set you free.
John 8:45-47
[45] Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! [46] Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don't you believe me? [47] Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.
WOW!!! Jesus just told the top religious leaders that they belong to Satan. He calls
them children of the devil!
Not good.
These leaders are truly either idiots or really enjoy being made fools of.
Read verses 48 thru 58.
The leaders truly hated Jesus.
But, he made his point.
John 8:55-56
[55] Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word.
Talk about not being able to handle the truth!
They actually wanted to kill him!
But, they must have forgotten one very important thing. He is God!!!
God is in control of everything!
They just didn't want or like hearing the truth.
THOUGHTS
1. Does the Truth really set you free?
2. If it does, why do we worry?
3. God is TRUTH and he is in total control of everything.
4. Yes, the TRUTH will set you free!
5. Let that reflect in our attitude.
